“The live stream allowed us to share the TEDxGrandForks experience with those both near and far,” said lead organizer Becca Grandstrand. “TEDxGrandForks is more than just a day of interesting talks; it is meant to start conversations that matter about ideas that can take our world to the next level. The live stream gave us the opportunity to share that vision with nearly 900 individuals from across North America.”
Focusing on the theme, Challenge Accepted, nine regional and national speakers and three TED Talk videos discussed unique and challenging ideas from music therapy and entrepreneurship to stem cell research and experiential education. Presenters included: entrepreneur and fashion designer, Anna Hovet (Chicago, IL); nationally-renowned education consultant, Diana Laufenberg (Philadelphia, PA); Chief of Cardiology at Cedars Sinai Heart Institute, Dr. Timothy Henry (Los Angeles, CA); leadership consultant and former Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Honorable Carolyn H. Becraft (Burke, VA); nationally recognized speaker and world-touring entertainer, Mark J. Lindquist (Fargo, ND); founding director of the North Dakota Youth Entrepreneurship Education Program, Barry Striegel (Bismarck, ND); Program Director of WINGS Treatment Center, Tamarah Gehlen (Litchfield, MN); senior music therapy major at the University of North Dakota, Carly Flaagan (East Grand Forks, MN); and President and COO of Appareo Systems, Dave Batcheller (Fargo, ND). Bios for each of the presenters can be found at www.tedxgrandforks.com.
TEDxGrandForks attendees came from across North Dakota and Minnesota to engage, network, and spark deep discussion. Though the speakers started the conversation, they were only a part of what TEDxGrandForks was all about. Innovation spaces took place in the Empire Art Center’s new black box theatre, Studio E, and featured food, conversation starters, and thought-provoking activities to cultivate discussions around the ideas that were presented.
